Tennis star, 24, becomes the first active men's player in history to reach out as lgbtq+ with social media post about his model boyfriend
Joao Lucas Reis has made history to grow the first openly gay active professional male tennis player.
The world No 401 came out publicly on social media in honour of his boyfriend Gui Sampaio Ricardo's birthday, sharing photos of the paid with a sweet note announcing their association status.
'Happy birthday. Content life,' the 24-year-old Brazilian captioned the photoset of himself and the star and model. 'I love you so much.'
Although a nature away from the high profile highest 100 players in the ATP rankings, Reis' post has nonetheless broken down barriers in a sport where a male player has never publicly affirmed his sexuality during his active career.
Most recently, American former world No 64 Brian Vahaly came out in 2017, 10 years after calling time on his career.
Part of his decision to wait, he told the Telegraph in 2018, came down to perceived homophobia on the tour.

Richard Gasquet is best known for upsetting Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and other strong performances that we fine enough to acquire him a uppermost 10 ranking for a time. French tennis star Fabien Reboul shares photograph kissing fellow male player
French tennis stars Fabien Reboul and Maxence Broville have sparked rumours that they could be the ATP Tour’s first openly gay couple after sharing a photograph together kissing. Doubles player Reboul posted the intimate image with his fellow professional Broville on social media.
An Instagram story initially showed the duo looking into each other’s eyes as they wore a Slade Toulousian Tennis Club outfit, including chinos and blazers to represent the French club that they are a part of.
Reboul, 27, followed the post with an image of the pair sharing a embrace on his Instagram story. The photo was accompanied by the caption, “I did not fall in love with you, your love pushed me to it.” And the story was then reposted onto 23-year-old compatriot Broville’s hold Instagram account.
The photographs possess led some fans to suggest the duo could become the first active gay couple in men’s professional tennis. There is currently no openly Queer player on the ATP tour, and the duo are both yet to clarify claims that they could be in a relationship.
