New Reddit boss says 'Ask Me Anything' about new approach to site's 'dark side'

Reddit proudly calls itself "the front page of the internet" and its own figures business it's one of the biggest sites online.

But its popularity has presented a problem - keep to the liberal, community-led moderation it began with, or get tough on pages passionate to abuse.

Last week Reddit's leader executive Ellen Pao resigned after an online petition accused her of overseeing a "new age of censorship".

New boss Steve Huffman has promised to take action against the site's "dark side".

His challenge will be to complete that while keeping the rest of the fiercely committed Reddit community on his side. And he's pledged to start by answering any question about the new approach via an AMA (Ask Me Anything).

AMAs are the site's bread and butter and have landed some of the highest profile names on earth, from Barack Obama to Channing Tatum.

But we advise Mr Huffman to recall some of the more notorious AMAs in preparation for his session.

Russia bans Reddit pages over drug growing discussion

The block was enacted by Roskomnadzor - Russia's Federal service for the Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media.

It had called for a block on pages posted two years ago about the best way to grow psilocybin mushrooms.

Roskomnadzor maintains the list of all sites banned in Russia and added Reddit to that roster at the behest of the country's national drug control agency, reported news site Meduza, external.

The agency also posted facts about the block, external to its own page on Russia's VKontacte social network.

In that note, it said it had sent knowledge about the forbid to "multiple addresses" at Reddit but had received no response. It assumed the lack of response came about because the site was understaffed in August as people were on holiday.

However, it said, this was no justify to "risk losing its entire audience" in Russia. It asked anyone with ties to Reddit's site administrators to let them recognize about its behavior.

"The board passed this rule trying to be proactive, and to stop friction between neighbours who may be flying opposite political or opinion flags," he said, adding that he felt in no way targeted. "It's a uncomplicated rule that applies to all of us equally."
