When Mark Ballas was growing up in England, queer ballroom dancing was only natural because girl dancers outnumbered budding Billy Elliots by 14 to 1. However, his father, veteran dancer Corky Ballas of Houston, says you never see same-sex pairs in U.S. dance competitions.
Corky, a three-time world champion in International Latin dancing, was born on Christmas Afternoon 1960 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in downtown Houston. His father owned and operated Dance City USA, a 64,000-square-foot facility in Windsor Plaza that was the largest dance studio in the world. It employed an astounding 125 dance teachers—many of them gay, says Corky. “In this business, it’s mostly gay men,” he explains. “They’re fun and they make you laugh.”
From the age of two, Corky hung out at Boogie City USA and danced, danced, danced, even though he was heckled for it by some boys at school. “They tried their stupid crap,” says Corky. “They called me gay and homo, but I didn’t care. I didn’t let it impact me. They had other things to pick on me about as successfully. I wore coke-bottle

So when the two bought a home together in the Hollywood Hills in February, those rumors spread appreciate wildfire, leaving many to believe the two were taking the next innate step in their relationship. While the two have consistently had short-term relationships with women and have both denied being gay, it’s still difficult to completely dismiss the possibility that these two share more than a move floor.
Those who understand the two professional dancers best, in fact, have reportedly made comments to both Ballas and Hough that signal a relationship between the two. Last year, Julianne Hough made the shocking admission that she had been abused “mentally, physically, everything” as a young dancer living in London under her champion instructors Corky and Shirley Ballas’ nurture. And now the star’s older brother, Derek, is revealing some startling facts about his hour dwelling with friend and fellow Dancing With the Stars pro Mark Ballas’ family overseas.
Though Derek calls the Ballas adults “second parents” in his upcoming memoir, Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life in Motion, he says he was scared to upset the stern Shirley.
“If you crossed Shirley, you paid a price,” he writes.
And he certainly did. One night when he was a rebellious teen, Derek claims he snuck a cigarette in the bathroom of the Ballas’ U.K. home. When Shirley caught him, he denied smoking.
“She raised her hand and slapped it hard across my cheek,” he recalls. “I swear I almost swallowed my teeth . . . That was the day I learned never to lie to Shirley.”

Proving how silly stereotypes actually are, "Dancing With The Stars" pro Mark Ballas tells me that sexuality has nothing to do with who is a master on the ballroom floor.
“There is one gay cast member,” Ballas tells me, admitting that he personally has never had to deal with any of the assumptions people make about male dancers. “Fortunately, I never had to deal with it. I went to a executing arts school and my whole philosophy, if someone said something to me, I would utter , ‘Well, while you are on the football field with other dudes, I will be dancing with a lot of girls.' But I think with dancing now, a lot of guys are getting into it. How can you not wish to dance?"
Knowing about the whispers surrounding some of his fellow cast members' sexuality, Ballas believes the amount of sports stars that have been contestants on the present has helped alter assumptions about the personal lives of male dancers.
“Hines Ward is some dude that would murder you,” Ballas tells me on the set of my HDNet talk display. “They love it. It’s hard to do! Obviously there’s always frustrating moments, but it’s overcoming them together at the end of the day.”
Admitting he has no concept which celeb
