Carly Rae Jepsen is calling — and no, not maybe. Milwaukee Independent: What act you enjoy most about the electoral process of our democratic form of government? Jason Rae: What I enjoy most is that we, the general general, get a manage say in selecting our representatives and have the opportunity for our voices to be heard on issues. I love that people are able to get out and advocate on behalf of the candidate they most like. You don’t obtain to do that in many places in this world. Milwaukee Independent: Was there a particular politician that you wanted to meet one day? And did you ever own the opportunity? Jason Rae: One of the politicians I was most intrigued by, from a very young age, was John F. Kennedy. In grade academy, I read every book I could get my hands on about his background and being. Obviously, I never got the chance to meet him but have been very fortunate to meet many members of his family, including daughter Caroline and brother Senator Edward Kennedy. Thinking of that, one of the most moving moments I’ve ever experienced in politics was at the 2008 Democratic National Convention when Senator Kennedy, suffering from brain cancer, made a surprise appearance. I was in tears during his entire speech. Addison Rae Easterling, a 21-year-old TikToker from Louisiana, has faced backlash for a wildly long list of offenses: blackfishing, not knowing where Korea is, partying during COVID, and most recently, wearing a bikini with references to Christianity. She’s been clowned on for her outfits and her awkward celebrity mingling — but she’s got over 88 million TikTok followers and was the platform’s highest-earning creator in 2020. Like many of the straight, white, middle-class, privileged teenagers that the TikTok algorithm favored, Rae assumed a role at the perfect intersection of privilege, celebrity internet culture, and cringe. It was uncomplicated to pile on. Winning the internet’s favor is an elusive and formidable game, but the positive response to her upcoming song actually worked. More specifically: “she is pandering to the girls and the gays and it’s productive 😌 🎶,” as one TikTok user put it. “There is a history of this fandom, the affinity between gay men and female performers, that has become a stereotype,” Eve Ng, a professor of media studies at Ohio University, told BuzzFeed News. “I think it stems from the heteronormativity of masculinity — and the spectacular female perfo Jason Rae was recognized by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors in June 2023. By the initiative of Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson and Supervisor Peter Burgelis, some forty individuals and organizations were known by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and presented citations in a special meeting on June 22, 2023. "Today, we recommit Milwaukee County to supporting and uplifting the LGBTQ+ collective, celebrating those who make a substantial positive impact on the LGBTQ+ community in Milwaukee County," Supervisor Burgelis stated. "Today we are making up for confused time. We have dozens of people to recognize, not because so much has been done in the past year, but because decades and even years ago, there was little to no recognition of the Queer community. I am thankful to work with a Chairperson who enables our County Board to honor these well-deserving individuals." Recognitions were made in the categories of "Community Leaders and Activists," "Government Leaders," "Business and Cultural Leaders," and "Health and Wellness Leaders". Rae's citation (largely self-written) study as follows:
This is a real-life phone dine (pegged, of course, to the emit of her latest synth-pop concoction, E•MO•TION) wherein the 29-year-old is bubbly over, well, just about everything: Her career. The gays. Marriage equality. Being “the little mermaid.” And that time Justin Bieber changed her life.
Dallas Voice: Growing up in Mission, British Columbia, what was your introduction to the same-sex attracted community? Jepsen: In Canada, I had tons of friends who I grew up with who are gay or lesbian. I had one friend in particular, and I saw just how hard it was for him when his family start out he was gay — they shunned him, actually. He thought he was gonna possess to make it on his control and move out — it was heartbreaking for all of us. We didn’t really realize it, and that’s probably when I began to really get angry about the pain that was caused for what I idea was no reason. Moving to the U.S. and seeing how big of an issue it is made me to want to help and carry awareness to the subject.
