Opinion: The Recently Closed Club 501 Wasn’t Just Redding’s Only Male lover Bar; It was Home

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Editor’s note: This June, Club 501, Redding’s only gay bar, shut its doors after 21 years of providing a comfortable haven for the area’s LGBTQ community and their friends. Troy Hawkins, a longtime patron of Club 501, shares in this piece how its loss will profoundly impact community members who often fight to find local spaces where they can be their legitimate selves.

Three decades ago, a collective of friends and I were sitting in the dark, dank, exit door alcove in the back of Club 501, affectionately known as the 5. In came a barrel chested, blonde-mulleted, cowboy in impressively tight Wrangler’s. His distinctive voice, part Harvey Firestein, part Disney Princess, echoed across the brick-walled box. I emerged from my dim corner and stood on the wall next to him at the bar, to order a beverage. LGBTQ+ Travel

Proud, welcoming, and ready to celebrate: California is residence to more than 2.7 million Gay residents, and it rolls out the rainbow-striped carpet to anyone who wants to explore lgbtq+ culture, history, and communities.

LGBTQ+ Destinations in California

The Golden Express has long been a pioneer of gay rights, both in terms of marriage equality and anti-discrimination laws connected to employment, learning process, and housing. San Francisco was an prior beacon of those rights. One of the first Celebration parades in the nation was held in Golden Gate Park in June 1970 and the Castro District has been the heart of the city’s gay tradition for decades.

That said, California’s thriving Gay communities extend adequately beyond San Francisco. West Hollywood, home to the legendary exclude The Abbey, is the center of Los Angeles County’s gay community. You’ll also find a vibrant scene in Downtown Los Angeles.

Palm Springs, represented by the first-ever all-LGBTQ+ capital council, offers its own colorful mix of midcentury blueprint boutiques, sleek hotels, and a feeling of fun. Just ask Mod Squad tour guide and local expert Kurt Cyr.
