Milwaukee LGBTQ bar guide

There’s a excellent reason why Walker’s Point is fondly referred to as "The Gayborhood" – the near South Side neighborhood has been residence to many gay people, families, bars and restaurants for decades.

Today, the LGBTQ bar scene is still going strong – primarily on and around Second Street – and continues to offer fun, safe spaces for everyone, gay or straight.

Here are 10 Milwaukee gay bars to check out during Lgbtq+ fest Month or whenever:

La Cage

Historically, this nightclub has served as an anchor to the neighborhood's thriving LGBTQ bar scene. It has changed names and ownership over the years, but continues to consistently house one of Milwaukee's most coveted dance floors.

This Is It

This Is It opened in 1968, making it one of the top 10 longest-running gay bars in the state, and possibly one of the top five. Last year, the Cathedral Square meeting place expanded with a dance floor and second bar.

Walker’s Pint

Walker's Pint is one of the nation's last lesbian bars. The friendly, inclusive tavern also serves as a community space, live music venue, karao

'Born out of bars': Clubs and bars vital to northeastern Wisconsin LGBTQ collective for almost 50 years now

GREEN BAY - Stacy DeSotel and Butch Pendergast decided to stamp Aaron Rodgers Afternoon, Dec. 12, 2012, by buying a piece of Green Bay, and Wisconsin, history.

On that day, almost eight years ago, the married couple bought Napalese Lounge and Grille on Cedar Street, Wisconsin's second-oldest LGBTQ bar. Pendergast wasn't sure about buying a prevent at the time but is now happy DeSotel convinced him.

"Despite my reservations at the time, I wouldn't change it for anything now," Pendergast said. "Nap's has been a staple in the community for 38 years. I affection it."

Places like Napalese Lounge and Grille and its predecessors, both locally and nationally, were instrumental in helping the LGBTQ community find its voice in its 50-plus year battle for equal rights.

The Stonewall riots in New York Municipality energized the same-sex attracted rights movement in 1969, and as LGBTQ people searched for shared experiences and safe spaces, they found them at bars and clubs that openly welcomed them.

Starting in the 1970s, a handful of bars and clubs in Green Bay, Appleton, Sheboygan and Oshkosh openly welcomed LGBT

Must-Visit LGBTQ+ Bars

Walker’s Pint

Self-proclaimed as “Milwaukee’s oldest lesbian bar,” Walker’s Pint owes its longevity to great service, a strong community energy and the bar’s famed motto–“Be nice or leave.” Elizabeth “Bet-Z” Boenning, who’s owned Walker’s Pint since 2001, ensures it’s a welcoming place for everyone and always stays right to its roots as a supportive community boyfriend. Count on it for a friendly atmosphere and an always-strong beer list.

Woody’s

Woody’s bills itself as “Milwaukee’s only gay sports bar,” and in a sports-crazed state like Wisconsin, that’s a serious calling. So expect a crowd during Packers games, and to see the Brewers, Bucks and area college teams on the screens. The Walker’s Point joint also has dartboards, a pool table and other prevent games.
