Captain Underpants Creator Quietly Reveals One of His Main Characters Is Gay—Get the Details!
Fans of the Captain Underpants children's guide series are in for a surprise with one of their favorite characters.
In the twelfth book of the series officially titled Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot, George and Harold meet their future selves.
And as author and illustrator Dav Pilkey quietly reveals, Harold is a lgbtq+ character.
"Soon, everyone had gathered together in Old George's studio," the passage study. "Old George, his wife, and their kids, Meena and Nik, sat on the couch, while Antique Harold, his husband, and their twins, Owen and Kei, plopped down in the giant giant beanbag chair."
The passage concluded, "'We're your dads when they were kids,' said Harold."
While some are applauding Pilkey's subtle but significant words, others are quick to question if it's right for their kids.

I’ve written this before, but when I was young I was not much of a reader. I aspired to peruse, and I liked “the idea” of reading, but the actual practice left me too dissatisfied. I mean I had Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros to overcome and they weren’t going to engage themselves after all. The Picture of Dorian Grey could delay and so many of the books on my shelf sat and calm dust, apart of course for my Calvin and Hobbes books, and, of course, my Captain Underpants collection. I’d bought, my parents bought let’s be honest here, the first book at the school publication fair because the man on the cover was wearing nothing but underwear, and when I opened the pages and saw the book had pictures and a comic book inside I insisted that I buy, that my parents buy me the book. Had it not been for Captain Underpants I might not have sustained any real desire to read in which case I could have focused on science and eventually cured canc…okay I couldn’t even completion that sentence, but you arrive at the general idea.

A limited weeks after the Parent-Teacher Organization at an elementary academy in Monroe, Michigan banned the latest Captain Underpants guide from a college book fair because it reveals that one of the main characters is gay, a educational facility district on the other side of the state is taking a distinct tack. Captain Underpants and the Sensational Saga of Sir Stinks-A-Lot will be available at next week’s book fairs in Rockford Widespread Schools, but the superintendent sent a letter to all elementary parents notifying them of “material that may not align with the values of many families.”
Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series is published by Scholastic, which runs a robust book unbiased program allowing students and their parents to buy books at a discount with part of the proceeds going to the institution.
