LGBTQ+ Nightlife of Greensboro, North Carolina in the 1980s and 1990s

Over the last half century or so, homosexual bars and clubs contain played a pivotal role for the social hemisphere of the LGBTQ+ collective. These establishments provided an environment that allowed this community to both bring to light, explore and flourish their own sexual-orientations as adequately as meet similar other people and create connections to like-minded social circles. Since World War II until the eve of social media, a bedtime out with friends (or alone) was all but the only near continual place of refuge for those that identified as gay or queer. One should put an emphasis on ‘near constant’, because while progression was exponentially sky-rocketed by the era of The New Deal during the 1930s and 1940s in more metropolitan and urban areas, there was a dark fluctuation during the height of Cold War during the Lavender Scare, even these scenes were under surveillance and oppression. “It is a well-known fact that several restaurants, clubs, and other establishments get most of their support from these sexual perverts,” Congressman Arthur L. Triad Pride Men’s Chorus – Celebrating 26 years 9 months 7 days
Founded in 1998, Triad Event Men’s Chorus performs at least two concert programs each year, one in early June and the other in early December. Each program is presented in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, and in Burlington.
In addition to our regular concert schedule, we have donated our time and our service to perform for events and organizations such as Stonewall thrust ball, Triad Softball league, Dining for Friends, the Guilford Leafy Gala, NC Event , Greensboro Pride, Winston-Salem Pride, Alamance Lgbtq+ fest, Salisbury Pride, the Adam Festival, National Anthem at Greensboro Grasshopper games, OPUS Concert Series, Greensboro Summer Solstice, Festival of Lights, hosted joint concerts with Triangle Gay Men’s Chorus, Gay Men’s Chorus of Asheville, and Hamburg Germany Male lover Chorus.
In July 2002, TPMC performed for the first occasion at the GALA Eastern Regional Festival held in Cincinnati. TPMC has also performed at GALA International Festivals in Montreal (2004), Miami (2008), and Denver (2012 & 2016) with more than 150 other lgbtq+ and lesbian choruses (some 6,000 people) from around the world.

Greensboro is a city of nearly 135 square miles and 275,000 people and is the third biggest capital in North Carolina. It is part of what is known of the Piedmont Triad region of the express, which encompasses Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem, as good as many smaller cities and towns. It is a town full of gorgeous green spaces, welcoming people, and plenty to see and do. Even improve, it has a growing and thriving LGBTQ community where all can discover their niche and place to belong.
A Bit of Greensboro History
Prior to the time that Greensboro was ever officially founded, Native American people hunted, camped and traded in the area for many centuries. When the Europeans first came to what is currently Greensboro, the area was inhabited by a Siouan-speaking people called Saura. In the late-1700s Scots-Irish, German and Quaker immigrants move to the area. The settlers bought the area from the Native Americans for just $98 and called the town Greensborough, a name that it would possess until 1895. By the late 1890s, everyone knew the city as Greensboro, and with the founding of the railroad in the area, the area also
College Park Baptist Church fully welcomes and affirms all persons without distinction regarding race, ethnicity, national origin, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other human category.
College Park has been affirming and welcoming of all for many years. Our LGBTQ-friendly church has many LGBTQ members, in addition to gay/lesbian ministers, deacons and staff members. In 2000, Michael Usey’s Bible & Homosexuality Study provided important conversations not only for our members, but for the community and across the world. In early 2012, we fought hard against alley of Amendment One in NC. In 2016, we fought for the repeal of HB2 and held a rally more than 1,000 packing the sanctuary (see videos below). We perform homosexual weddings, and welcome many that have been beaten up by the Bible at other churches!
