Steamworks Chicago

Probably the Finest Sauna in the USA

While the USA doesn't have many great saunas, this one stands out. Not only does it get more people than most gay saunas (its right in the "gayborhood" of Chicago) but its enormous and well-maintained. On the ground floor you have lockers, a nice tidy indoor pool/jacuzzi, and steam room. The second floor is probably the busiest, with two suckatoriums / slurp ramps with elevated gloryholes, as well as a sling area, gloryhole cabins, and several dozen confidential rooms for rent. On the third floor, you own a full-size gym with well-maintained equipment, another suckatorium with raised gloryholes, a group of gloryhole booths, and an open play area, as well as again a couple dozen rooms for rent. Guys range from twinks to guys in their 50s and everything in between. Gets busy on Friday/Saturday nights (especially when the bars complete around 2am) and there's a decent crowd Sunday evenings. Havent been on weekdays so can't speak to that - but this is overall a great sauna with lots of action!

This New Year’s Eve at Man’s Country, a Chicago bathhouse reveal since 1973, hundreds of men, women, transgender and nonbinary people showed out for a move party celebrating the last hours of a queer American landmark.

Appropriately titled “Loose Ends,” the closing event was part funeral, part rebirth and all hedonistic rager. Patrons danced, cruised, drank, caressed, hallucinated, sauna’d and paid their respects from before midnight to well past 11 AM. It was both a throwback to the venue’s heyday, before the internet made many bathhouses feel obsolete, and a glimpse at what could have been had they thrown more events like this, which balanced sleaze with sociability and made the place appealing to those beyond the aging gay generation for which it was once a mecca.

Man’s Country wore its history on its walls, with portraits of famous patrons, nude men, and other artwork throughout reminding visitors that this wasn’t some staid, humorless bathhouse. In the basement (dubbed “The Pit,”) a huge sauna—once billed as the largest in the Midwest—sat reverse a shower and wet area modeled after Parisian sewers. In its past,

Anna Erickson likes to walk around her Chicago neighborhood of Pilsen. A social studies teacher and history enthusiast, she says she can’t help but notice this odd brick building she often passes; it sits right in the middle of a residential block, and it has large Roman-style stone columns. Above the door, an inscription reads “Chicago Public Bath,” yet there’s no bathhouse running in there these days. (In fact, it’s zoned to become residential someday.)

Anna’s passed that building so many times that she eventually asked Curious Capital to figure out something that regularly gnaws at her: “There’s a common bathhouse in my neighborhood. What happened to the other bathhouses?”

You may have had a similiar question if you’ve ever passed one of these old facades or even the occasional operating bathhouse in the city. But defining Chicago’s experience with “bathhouses” is complicated. The word’s applied to distinct kinds of places, ranging from a place for the poor to scrub down; a place to have sex but then catch a show; and a place to pamper yourself with extreme heat and cold you would never tolerate anywhere else, let alone pay for the privilege
